Landscape paintings & rural scenery
The mixture of natural and man-made elements together creates a complementary mixture that I enjoy in my compositions.
I have been a painter since my high school years in the mid 1970's and have continued through multiple decades into the present. Most of my work is landscape based and features local settings; it supports a Regionalist sensitivity to the natural and local elements of an area. I have lived in several different geographic locations during my career and the resulting paintings from each location show the unique visual complexion of those communities. The objects that cross the horizon line where sky meets ground are often overlooked; water towers, farm buildings, utility poles & rural scenery are bridges to the sky and are critical for scale references in the picture space.
My landscape paintings usually feature regional scenery in rural settings. The mixture of natural and man-made elements together creates a complementary mixture that I enjoy in my compositions. One of my creative goals is that the paintings to be a visual journey that allows the essence of the subject matter to come to life. During my 50+ years as a painter I have retained a connection to naturalism and clear representation of my subjects. Maintaining visual clarity in my landscape spaces is important to me as an avenue for viewer connection; it also assists in articulating the fidelity of the rural spaces of my paintings.
The blend of architecture with organic forms allows the two polar elements to be integrated into realistic designs. I pay particular attention to details and selective features of the environment such as rooflines, silos, houses, and out-buildings; they add visual tension to the spaces and contrast against the trees and clouds in the space. Clouds are especially featured as normal components of our environment and they play a key role in directing the viewer's attention, as well as bringing validity to the scene.
